Here’s an interesting post that was written on a Northwestern University blog yesterday.

The title may catch you off-guard, and you’re probably wondering why we’re sharing it with you, especially considering our goal is to get you into more internships, and better ones at that.

As Ms. Behar writes, “the primary benefit, according to [Northwestern University Professor Steven] Duke, isn’t just the workplace lifestyle – it’s your boss, and his or her potential for serving as an impressive reference.”

It’s true, and you can get this sort of experience at most summer jobs, or volunteering at a non-profit, and that will look great on your resume.

But the article takes on internships that denigrate students, and also says that it’s unnecessary to pick up five, eight, or fourteen internships during your time in college. Now this, we agree with, and that’s why we publish internship reviews: so that if you only have the chance to grab one or two internships while you’re in college, you can make sure it’s a great one, with responsibilities, leadership opportunity, and sure, a great boss who will mentor you and write a gleaming letter of recommendation.
