YouIntern in Advertising Age

We're pleased to announce that we were featured in Advertising Age this morning, in the Talentworks section. Anand Chopra-McGowan, a YouIntern partner, was privileged to be interviewed by Michael Bush on the subject of advertising talent, the value of internships and the growing demand for talent.

We're extra pleased that Maurice Haynes, who supported us in our partnership with Arnold Worldwide, chimed in with some words of support.

The article lives here. Have a read! And thanks to everyone for their support.

What’s the primary benefit of an internship?

Here’s an interesting post that was written on a Northwestern University blog yesterday.

The title may catch you off-guard, and you’re probably wondering why we’re sharing it with you, especially considering our goal is to get you into more internships, and better ones at that.

As Ms. Behar writes, “the primary benefit, according to [Northwestern University Professor Steven] Duke, isn’t just the workplace lifestyle – it’s your boss, and his or her potential for serving as an impressive reference.”

It’s true, and you can get this sort of experience at most summer jobs, or volunteering at a non-profit, and that will look great on your resume.

5 Tips for Your Portfolio

Shane Hutton is Creative Director at Modernista!, and has led creative ideas for Hummer, Cadillac, and countless other brands. Who else would you want giving you portfolio tips? We're grateful that Shane took so much time and provided such rich information, so have a read and enjoy.

1. Make it small. Preferably pocket sized. Something the people you want to show it to can slip into their pocket or purse and look at on a plane.

2. Make the cover interesting. That's the first thing we see. Make it count.

3. Avoid puns.

4. Don't be afraid to throw in things that tell people about you personally. Not just your work. A page here or there with no marketing on it, but that is entertaining and reflective of your taste, helps to break the book up into digestible chunks.

YouIntern.com Announces Partnership with Tangerine

YouIntern.com is pleased to announce a new partnership with Tangerine, a talent placement service in New York City.

We’re especially proud to launch this partnership because Tangerine’s goals are similar to ours: placing candidates in companies where they will prove to be the best fit. While Tangerine deals with more senior-level placements, and we’re more committed to internships, our motives are pretty similar.

The internship at Tangerine promises to be an interesting and unique one: you’ll glimpse into the dynamic world of talent recruitment while working in a creative environment, managing some resumes and absorbing as much as you can.

The process will work similar to our Arnold partnership: anyone who reviews a new internship and sends us their resume will be eligible. The deadline on this opportunity is May 20th. Good luck and keep checking YouIntern.com – we’ll have more of these opportunities shortly.

Internships for High School Students?

This article brings up an important point: high school students are looking for internships sooner and sooner, and this creates competition for college kids who are closer to their job hunt and rely on internships to bolster their resumes.

The problem? High school kids think that internships make them look more competitive in the eyes of college admissions officers.

Now, this article sure doesn’t mention anything groundbreaking. Hey, you should search online for internships. Oh, you should network, as well. And by the way, they’re important for your career. Earth shattering, I know. But the takeaway is just as easy to understand as this was to write: everybody needs internships. Soon, middle school kids will be hunting for internships thanks to their overzealous parents, so for college kids, the hustle just got that much harder.

Can your offer be rescinded?

There's a fantastic article in today's New York Times that introduces us to some college juniors and seniors who have lost their offers from Bear Stearns. You should be familiar with Bear Stearns' collapse and JPMorgan's subsequent acquisition, but while this affected thousands of investors and billions of dollars of invested money, there's a lot of relevance for college juniors and seniors.

Bear had extended job offers to approximately 300 graduating seniors and 300 internships for rising seniors, and these students quickly found themselves stuck in mud: the seniors were without a job, well after the finance hiring season had ended, and the Wall Street job market was thin. Interns had also let the hiring season (correctly) elapse with their offers in hand.

YouIntern.com's Founders Interviewed in Two College Newspapers

Hi there – just checking in, making sure you’re doing well. Some of you may be new here, and that could be thanks to two recent college newspaper articles that gave us some coverage.

First, the Massachusetts Daily Collegian, published at UMass Amherst, gave us some wonderful coverage, and Maurice Haynes, VP, Director of Worklife at Arnold Worldwide, had this to say:

"[Youintern.com] is really providing a forum for prospective employers, and for students to learn something about the internship process," he said. "It's creating a pipeline for the future of stronger interns. In the long run, it will give us [Arnold Worldwide] a stronger pool of applicants to choose from."

The connection? He’s putting his words into actions, as he’s helped us create our partnership with Arnold (more on that tomorrow).
